Description: Mindfulness has been described as a particular way of paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, without judgment. The key component of most meditation practices, it is a skill that can be developed by anyone to transform how we experience life. This presentation will provide an overview of mindfulness, describe the difference between the “doing” and “being” modes of mind, examine the multidimensional phenomenon of pain, and show how mindfulness practices can be used to transform the experience of pain. Experiential practices and real-life examples will be used to illustrate key points in the presentation.
About the Presenter: Dr. Susan Head is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Durham, NC. She completed her internship at Duke University Medical Center in 1991 and was on faculty at the Duke University Diet and Fitness Center for the next 7 years. One of her specialty areas is health psychology, helping people with health-related issues such as obesity, chronic pain and sleep disorders. She has been a meditation practitioner for 15 years and has been using mindfulness in her clinical work for the past several years. Dr. Head recently became an instructor for Mindfulness-Based Stress and Pain Management with the integrative medicine program at UNC, where she trains individuals to use mindfulness to transform their experience of everyday life.
